On Monday 12th October, Maiden Erlegh School in Reading hosted a mathematics enrichment day, delivered by the department teaching team as well as specialist staff from Maiden Erlegh School and the Happy Puzzle Company.
The students took part in a carousel of activities all centred around improving the students’ appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics. Students worked in small groups with their peers to solve ancient Chinese puzzles, discover the Indian multiplication grid and how this links to creating Islamic art, as well as cracking World War II codes and working logically to investigate real-life problems.
Students were also fortunate to take part in a session delivered by the Happy Puzzle Company, which focussed on hands-on puzzles and problems requiring efficient team work and cooperation. The presenter spoke very highly of our students who were superb ambassadors for the school, stating that they were ‘enthusiastic’, ‘resilient’ and ‘very well behaved and engaged in the activities’.
A themed lunch was provided for students which included pie (π), cube potatoes and 100% orange ice lollies.
Students responded very positively about their experiences during the day, stating that working collaboratively helped them to ‘share ideas’ and ‘learn new ways to approach tasks’. They enjoyed ‘learning the use of Maths in different cultures and in the war,’ as well as ‘using logic to solve tricky puzzles’.
Thank you to all staff who were involved in delivering this special day, including teaching staff, TA’s and the Happy Puzzle Company. In addition, may I take this opportunity to thank all of the students for modelling such high standards of behaviour throughout the day, as well as taking such an active role in the challenging activities.
