Higher Ability and Gifted Students
At Maiden Erlegh School in Reading we are determined to ensure that the curriculum is challenging for all, including higher ability and gifted students. We also try to ensure that there is a wide range of enrichment opportunities for our higher ability students.
On arrival in Year 7, students are identified as higher ability based on their Key Stage 2 scores. These lists are revisited at Data Collection Points to ensure that any students arriving without Key Stage 2 scores or those who are performing strongly compared to their peers are not missed. Class registers identify these students and teachers use that information to ensure that lessons and homework tasks stretch them sufficiently. All departments have specific strategies for meeting the needs of higher ability students, and schemes of work show what provision is made for them.
We run the Gold Programme in Key Stage 4 and Silver Programme for Foundation (Year 7 to 9) which offer a number of extra-curricular and enrichment activities during the course of the year to provide additional appropriate opportunities for higher ability and gifted students. For more information on the Gold and Silver programmes please see the attachments below.
Mr J Tomsett is the point of contact for information about provision for higher ability students and gifted students and for the Gold and Silver Programmes.
